We follow Clean Needle Technique (CNT) as determined by the Council of Colleges of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (CCAOM), so the potential negative effects associated with breaking the skin are minimized. All needles used are sterile and only used once before properly disposed of in biohazard containers. As a result, risk for serious illness is nearly eliminated. Most common side effects are mild drowsiness following treatment, a feeling of relaxation, increased energy, increased libido, and improved mental clarity. Roughly 15% of patients experience bruising of at least one needle site, and this risk is increased for patients on blood thinners. Acupuncture, when properly performed, is an extremely low-risk procedure.
